The types of Nuclear Weapons stored at Yellow Water during the Cold War
was Mk/B57 Tactical Nuclear Depth Bombs or Bombs. This was the smallest of
the Nuclear Bombs in the Navy Inventory. They were deployed on the S-3, P-3
and many other Naval aircraft in the Jax area including the SH-60 based in
Mayport to support the Anti-Submarine (ASW) mission here in Jacksonville.
Bunkers are also in Mayport and NAS Jax to store such weapons and many other
types of stores such as the B-61 Tactical Nuke based on our carriers. Of
course they can neither confirm nor deny such activity at either base now.

1 Stepping inside the open bunker door you see the explosion proof lighting, a no smoking sign on the back wall, (duh) and ground wires running the length of the bunker. It's a good idea to dissipate that nasty static build-up or direct lightning bolts away from big bombs. Other than that, it's just plain empty. 2 Now inside the bunker looking out the door. The bunker seemed small. Maybe 20' x 30' . This was home to many B57 Nuclear Depth Bombs. Standard weapons or ordinance was stored in the outer perimeter bunkers we will see later. 3 Special Weapons Precautions sign on inside of door. Due to national security concerns, the Military will never admit nor deny the presence or absence of Nuclear weapons at any facility. The term "Special Weapons" is as close as you will get to seeing the term "Nuclear Weapons". Draw your own conclusions from this statement. 4 Actual door thickness is about 3 or 4 inches. Heavy enough to keep bad guys out . 5 Going to the end of the east bunker, this is a view of the north bunkers. These are still padlocked. No, I didn't break into one to see what was inside. Tempting as it may seem. 6 Last picture is what I will call building # 627. This Garage is located on one end of the surveillance building and has this drive through with garage doors and a super ventilation fan. This is similar to a Fire Station bay. The V-100 "Commando" and "Dragon" armored personnel carriers were staffed and ready 24/7 to exterminate intruders. A P-19 Firefighting apparatus was stored there too. |
