1 About half way down the road to the sallyport is a building with this cool looking gator mascot painted on the outside. The outer gold ring says Electronic Sensor Systems. The gator is wearing a crossed ammunition bandoleer. In his right hand he is holding what appears to be a walkie talkie and under his left arm he is holding a couple of atoms in orbit. Apparently, there were many electronic sensors around the facility to detect intruders. 2 A road is seen leading to the right just before approaching the sallyport. This leads to a heliport and more bunkers we will visit later. 3 Closer to the Double gated entrance you can see perimeter lighting and razor wire fencing. When bunkers were stocked with weapons, this area, called a sallyport would NEVER open both gates at the same time. The outer gate would open and you would advance your vehicle into the inspection area where the first gate would close behind you. Once security personnel approved, the inner gate was opened and you went inside. 4 Looking down the fence line where weeds and small pine trees now grow. 5 Halfway in the sallyport, you see the guard shack and pedestrian turnstiles. This was referred to as Marine Post #2. |
