I WAS THERE FOR 1 1/2 YRS. IN 1961 &1962 AND HAVE FOND MEMORIES. THE BARRACKS LOOKS PRETTY MUCH THE SAME, BUT A LOT OF IT MUST HAVE CHANGED OVER THE YRS. THERE WAS APPROX. 100 MARINES & 200 SAILORS.ONE END OF THE BARRACKS HOUSED THE SAILORS & THE OTHER END THE MARINES. WE RAN CONVOYS TO MAYPORT TO REARM SHIPS. THANKS FOR HELPING ME RELIVE OLD MEMORIES.
I was a marine guard that escorted the many convoys to MAYPORT had alot of good times with fellow Marines on and off base.It was full of wildlife even had some animals there,snakes which i experienced up close and personal was bitten by a pigmy rattlesnake on duty one night wild pigs were everwhere armadillos we even had a gator in the compound lived in a large drainage pipe fish and game came and took the gator to be released somewhere else.Any Marine statined there from 72-74 get in touch. I was the LPO of the Handling crew from 78 to 80. I see by reading some of the other comments I recognize my fellow workers. This facility was nothing more than a Navy Special Weapons Site. The igloos were the old magazines and the ones close to the buildings were the new mags. I was lucky to be with the crew that moved from the old into the new. There was no trains that loaded from that site and the large asphalt pad was the helo pad. That was never used while I was there and we moved the weapons by truck over to the main side to be loaded onto aircraft for shipment. I was lucky to work with a great crew and I would like to be floating down the springs once again.
I was a sailor stationed there for two years from July 1966 to August 1968. It was great duty and a great duty station. I Googled Yellow Water to see if it had gone the way of the NAS and found this site. It brought back a lot of great memories. My buddies and I spent a lot of time in, around, and on those magazines and on convoys to Mayport. I was sorry to hear Cecil Field was closed, but time marches on.
I had two tours in Yellowater, first from 1971-74, second tour 1977-1980. I worked in Assembly Bldg 626, 617, the handling building as well as the paint booth. The compound was larger back then, the sallyport was just up the road from the Admin Office. I use to truck weapons to Mayport over the road before the start of flying them by helo. If I remember right, we would use the helo pad in the compound for loadouts to Mayport, this was in the '78-'80 time frame. The new magazines construction was a fiasco. The concrete didn't cure correctly, the mags always leaked, the rain would wash away the grass on top of them, etc, etc. The original 21 earth covered igloos were the best, stayed cool in the summer, but never could figure out why they built them on the perimeter! Made alot of friends there over the years, some guys were mainstays, like Freddie George and Ray Fontenot.
4-6-08 The sight is great you have done a good job. I was assigned to the Marine baricks from Nov 1959 to Sept. 1962. At that time it was the most modern baricks that the Marine corps had it got a wright up in the Lether Neck Magizne. What a great duty station. I had a great time and met many friends. A fue years back several of us have goten together for a small reunion. We have one comming up in a couple weeks Aprl 26th in Crandall Ga.
